Counsellors in Training and Placements

If you’re currently studying to become a Counsellor, Psychotherapist or Psychologist, and you’re on track to qualifying for the BACP, UKCP or BPS,  and you’re looking for a Counselling Placement as the first step in your professional career then we’re here for you!

At Novo Counselling we provide you with real-life experience, not only from your allocated casework but how to operate as a professional therapist within a structured and quality focused private practice. You’ll learn far more about being a professional counsellor whilst on a placement with us and a placement with us is the perfect compliment to your academic studies.

We’re a large multi-disciplinary team with a well-structured supervision, support, CPD  and clinical governance model that values our therapists and champions the highest standards in clinical delivery. Whilst we offer counselling services to adults, adolescents, couples, families and children, on a placement, we’ll carefully match your skills and experience with our clients’ needs and ensure you only get the cases you’re able to manage. Most placement counsellors start by working in our Tier 3 category and are expected to work with up to six clients per week. As a placement counsellor, we normally don’t expect you to see couples or families unless you already have previous experience or qualifications.

Your assigned mentor will assist you in settling in, finding your way around, familiarising you with our policies and admin procedures. Following a three month probation period, you’ll be invited to meet with the Senior Leadership Team to discuss your progress and future goals. Following your placement, and once you’ve qualified and gained full membership of the relevant body, you’ll be invited to discuss your progress and your suitability to apply for a permanent position with Novo Counselling once a suitable vacancie arises. We hope to offer permanent positions to placement counsellors who chose to continue their careers with us and meet our criteria.

As a placement counsellor, you’ll be assigned two x four-hour sessions per week. These will be the same time, same day every week and you’ll be allocated a room that you’ll keep for all your client sessions. You’ll be allocated either one evening or weekend session plus one other session. Over time you’re likely to build up to a 6 client caseload though there are occasions when you might find you have up to 8 clients on an irregular basis. We are careful to ensure you don’t have more clients than you’re capable of handling and through feedback and supervision we carefully monitor your progress and ensure you get the support you need.

The Counselling profession requires a regular and reliable commitment to our clients and your placement is based on a contract between us and your clients. This contract requires your commitment for a minimum of twelve months and allows for up to five weeks holiday per year.

Are you looking for a placement that will support your growth as a professional counsellor with all the help, care and guidance we offer? Apply now!
